Wednesday's Wisdom

Today's tidbit is all about blogs. I don't know if you are aware of it but our sister blog, The Book's Blurb Blog, was down for 7 days. This was through no fault of our own but because one of Google's automatic bots declared it a spam blog.

You all have seen them. Blogs that link back to themselves, try to sell you nothing but their products through iffy links. I could go on forever but having the blog down taught me patience. And a lot about the blogosphere.

When it first happened, I was panicked and immediately hit the RESTORE button right next to the blog. This was a good thing. First, I had to jump through quite a few hoops, two password verifications and a phone text with a specific code to prove I was a real live person.  Once that was proved, I got the right to hit the RESTORE key then they gave me instructions.

One was to go to their group forums and talk to the special moderators there. This was a good thing as they are very knowledgeable and helpful. Plus it seems that all of them have been through it themselves. There were posts to read, questions to answer and more but the biggest thing they taught me was patience. See, Google really doesn't want to shut down legitimate blogs. We knew we had a good product and the best thing we could do was continue with this blog.

But the waiting got hard. And harder. Then even harder when it hit the fifth day. We read all the posts given to me and found the list of what Google felt constitutes a spam blog. We answered each one of those points in detail, giving them reasons why we knew the blog wasn't spam. And we waited some more. Miracles do happened when you are patient. Finally, yesterday, we wake up and the blog isn't in the deleted category any more. Again, we had a moment of momentary panic then saw it had the number 1 spot in our list of blogs.

So, we're sure you're asking what does that have to do with wisdom? The wisdom is this: know your blog intimately, understand what you're trying to do with it just in case you accidentally get caught up in the same thing we did. Had we not know our blog and everything we'd done to and for it, we probably couldn't have answered all those points accurately. By doing that, we discovered the one thing that might have set off the bots. We had looped a picture back to the blog on their Thursday's Tidbits day, possibly unintentionally alerting the bots. We'll never know because Google doesn't explain their criteria...they expect you to figure it out all by yourself.

And as much pain, heartache and agony that put us through...we are happy they have those systems in place...without it, the Google blogosphere would be a place none of us could hang out.
